The Director-General of Nigerian Maritime and Safety Administration Agency (NIMASA), Dr Bashir Jamoh, has been applauded by stakeholders over the release of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) members and 3 other Nigerians who were kidnapped in Rivers State by gunmen on Monday on their way to Port Harcourt from Kula Area in Akuku – Toru Local Government Area before being abducted at the Kula – Abonnema waterway.
Dr Jamoh had in strong terms expressed his agency’s displeasure and unequivocal condemnation of the unpalatable development especially at a time the industry was beginning to witness tremendous gains in our maritime security sphere and are getting commended for the progress both locally and internationally, and assured the President – General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju who had earlier promised to move his team to the vicinity of the incident, of NIMASA’S support during the challenging period till the abducted maritime workers are returned safely to their families and industry.
“NIMASA is also following the trend of the events, and our Deep Blue assets, especially the C4i and intelligence centres are monitoring and we shall keep the public apprised of progress,”the DG said.
It is therefore not surprising that the release of the abducted citizens, which occurred on Saturday evening, was attributed to the intervention of the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh and other stakeholders.
The DG of NIMASA, in fulfilment of his promise of updating the public of development, broke the news some moments after confirming their release on Saturday.
The MWUN President General is expected to shed more light on the incidents surrounding the abduction anytime soon.
Meanwhile, the released abductees are believed to be in good physical condition.
As at the time of filing this report, we are yet to assertain if a ransom was paid.
