Nigerians frown at 114% increment for political office holders

The Federal Government has approved a 114 percent increase in the salary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governors, and all elected politicians in the country. This development has created reactions from all concerned quarte has been trailed by mixed reactions from members of the public. Most see it as  highest level of insensitivity of the current leadership of Ahmed Tinubu at such a time Nigerians are wailing in in a fast nosediving economy with high cost of living.

A source who chose to be anonymous said that the government of the day do not really care a bit about the suffering of Nigerians. “How can a government increase wages of political office holders more than 100 percent. What happens to the rest of Nigerians?”

This was informed by the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) who approved a 114 percent salary increase for all elected politicians, including the President, Vice President, Governors, lawmakers, and judicial and public office holders.

The commission which is saddled with the responsibility of determining the appropriate remuneration for political office holders, said that the implementation of the reviewed remuneration packages was effective from January 1st, 2023.

Furthermore,  the former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani explained saying,  “With this development, a   Federal Lawmaker will now earn a monthly salary of about 2 million naira and another 25 million naira monthly as cost for running his office. He cited that raising the minimum wage of poor workers should have come first before increasing the salary of elected politicians.
